According to the Association of Fund Raising Counsel, more than 80% of the grant application that went to the 23,000 foundations in the United States were either misdirected or filled out improperly. The National Commission on the Student Financial Assistance, an U. S. Congressional Subcommittee, found that while there was more than $7 billion available to students from corporations, only $400 million was used! Some $6.6 billion went unclaimed, not because people were unqualified but because the students did not know where to look. To put that figure in a more understandable perspective, the unused portion of the available funds would amount to $600 for each of the 15 million college bound students in the United States alone. PRIVATE SECTOR FUNDS
Philanthropy in the United States is alive and well. More than 65% of the available scholarships, fellowships, grants and loans are from the private sector. These funds, which totaled $56 billion in 1987 increased to a whopping $151 billion in 1992. Of that amount, 15% or $20 billion, goes into the United States educational system. An additional $20 billion is dispersed worldwide.

Don’t be concerned with age; 42% of all college students are over the age of 25 and many organizations are interested in reentry students and the mid-career development student. The Business and Professional Women’s Foundation awards hundreds of scholarships to applicants who must be older that 25 or even 35.
